After You by Jojo Moyes

after you
This is the long awaited sequel of Jojo Moyes’ novel Me Before You. I’m sure it needs no introduction as it is currently being made into a film directed by Thea Sharrock where Emilia Clark and Sam Claflin are playing Lou and Will. I for one have been counting down the months for this book to be released and I was right to be excited about it.

In the last book we followed Louisa (Lou) as she became the main carer for Will Traynor, a successful business man who was involved in a tragic accident which left him paralysed and totally reliant on everyone around him. He is depressed, sad and so angry with life that he sees no other way but to travel to Dignitas Clinic in Switzerland to end his life. As they begin to fall for each Lou makes it her mission to help him live again, to laugh again. But as we find out her efforts were in vain and the book ends with Lou sticking to the promise she made to Will…to start living her life.

In After You we meet Lou again who clearly is struggling to get over the death of the love of her life. She has an accident one night when she falls from a roof and this is slowly but surely a turning point for her. Lou is a gentle soul who puts everybody before herself. When she meets Sam, the paramedic who saved her that fateful night of the fall, things start to look up.

There’s only one problem, she is riddled with grief and guilt and every other emotion that she can summon. This is not helped by the appearance of Lily, a dysfunction and unpredictable teenager who throws a spanner into the works again and again. When many opportunities knock on her door, Louisa Clark knocks them all back to ensure the happiness of the people in her life.

I literally devoured this book, reading long into the night and counting down the minutes at work so I could get the kindle out. As always, it’s beautifully written, with poignant moments and real life situations that will have you crying so much the words become blurred. All along I was waiting with baited breath for Lou to do the right thing. The characters such as Lou’s mum and Sam where fantastic, helped along with the knack that Jojo has of bringing characters and places to life.

The ending could not have been more perfect. A definite 5 stars and a must read novel. Now that I have finished the book I’ll have to start a countdown to the film’s release which is set for Summer 2016.

  1. I bawled like a baby reading Me Before You, and I’m slightly terrified to read this one because Will was so special. Your review just convinced me. Was this as tearful as the prequel?

… And I can’t believe I’ve never heard about the movie before. Emilia Clark and Sam Claflin!!!! PRETTY PEOPLE! I hope it’s going to be amazing. ❤

    1. I was the same. This one isnt as emotional as the last but I definitely shed a tear or ten. Aw you will love it. It was so good to see something good happen. Oh check out the film, looks class. Enjoy, Happy reading and thank you. X
