New June Book Releases

Sometimes life becomes VERY busy and some things take priority over others. Due to this I am way behind on my reading. I hate when this happens because I would gladly spend every minute of every day with a mug of coffee or glass of wine and a good book. The lovely people at Penguin UK and Random House Publishing – Vintage Publications sent me these two beauties in return for an honest review over at Jewellbooks.

The Girls by Emma Cline
Its California in the summer of 1969. In the dying days of a floundering counter-culture a young girl is unwittingly caught up in unthinkable violence, and a decision made at this moment, on the cusp of adulthood, will shape her life….

Evie Boyd is desperate to be noticed. In the summer of 1969, empty days stretch out under the California sun. The smell of honeysuckle thickens the air and the sidewalks radiate heat.

Until she sees them. The Girls. The snatch of cold laughter. Hair, long and uncombed. Dirty dresses skimming the tops of thighs. Cheap rings like a second set of knuckles. And at the centre, Russell. Russell and the ranch, down a long dirt track and deep in the hills. Incense and clumsily strummed chords. Rumours of sex, frenzied gatherings, teen runaways.

Was there a warning, a sign of things to come? Or is Evie already too enthralled by the girls to see that her life is about to be changed forever?

Modern Lovers by Emma Straub
Friends and former college bandmates Elizabeth, Andrew and Zoe have watched one another marry, buy property, and start families, all while trying to hold on to the identities of their youth. But nothing ages them like having to suddenly pass the torch – of sexuality, independence, and the ineffable alchemy of cool – to their own teenage offspring.

Back in the band’s heyday, Elizabeth put on a snarl over her girl-next-door smile, rich-kid Andrew let his unwashed hair grow past his chin, and beautiful Zoe was the lesbian all the straight women wanted to sleep with.

Now nearing fifty, they all live within shouting distance in the same Brooklyn neighbourhood and the trappings of the adult world seem to have arrived with ease. But the summer that their children reach maturity (and start sleeping together), the fabric of the adult lives suddenly begins to unravel, and the secrets and revelations that are finally let loose can never be reclaimed.
Out on 30th June by Penguin UK. Pre-order here at:-Amazon

As always I will post my reviews to Jewellbooks and keep your eyes peeled on Amazon also. Thank you for reading.
